Only Limited Amount of Scattered Rain Falls on South Dakota

UNDATED - For the week ending Sunday, hot and dry conditions persisted, according to the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service. Average temperatures were above normal across the State, with temperatures in western South Dakota averaging four to 10 degrees above normal. A limited amount of scattered rain fell. Crop conditions continued to decline. There were 6.6 days suitable for fieldwork. Topsoil moisture supplies rated 37 percent very short, 42 short, 20 adequate, and 1 surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies rated 32 percent very short, 39 short, 28 adequate, and 1 surplus.

Winter wheat condition rated 20 percent very poor, 41 poor, 32 fair, 7 good, and 0 excellent. Winter wheat coloring was 94 percent. Mature was 66 percent. Harvested was 14 percent, behind 19 last year, and equal to the five-year average.

Spring wheat condition rated 38 percent very poor, 34 poor, 18 fair, 9 good, and 1 excellent. Spring wheat headed was 98 percent, equal to last year, and ahead of 92 average. Coloring was 61 percent, near 60 last year, and ahead of 43 average. Mature was 12 percent.

Oats condition rated 21 percent very poor, 23 poor, 30 fair, 24 good, and 2 excellent. Oats headed was 98 percent, near 94 both last year and average. Coloring was 71 percent, ahead of 62 last year, and well ahead of 48 average. Mature was 21 percent. Harvested was 5 percent, behind 17 last year, and near 9 average.

Barley condition rated 47 percent very poor, 32 poor, 20 fair, 1 good, and 0 excellent. Barley headed was 95 percent, ahead of 88 last year and 83 average. Coloring was 47 percent, ahead of 35 last year and 30 average.

Corn condition rated 11 percent very poor, 17 poor, 35 fair, 34 good, and 3 excellent. Corn silking was 2 percent, behind 17 last year and 11 average.

Soybean condition rated 11 percent very poor, 17 poor, 38 fair, 31 good, and 3 excellent. Soybeans blooming was 29 percent, behind 48 last year and 38 average. Setting pods was 1 percent, near 4 last year and 2 average.

Sorghum condition rated 7 percent very poor, 25 poor, 59 fair, 9 good, and 0 excellent. Sorghum emerged was 97 percent, near 94 last year and 93 average. Headed was 4 percent, behind 14 last year and 9 average.

Sunflower condition rated 13 percent very poor, 20 poor, 60 fair, 7 good, and 0 excellent. Sunflowers emerged was 98 percent, ahead of 80 last year.

Alfalfa condition rated 47 percent very poor, 33 poor, 12 fair, 7 good, and 1 excellent. Alfalfa first cutting was 95 percent complete. Second cutting was 34 percent, near 32 last year.

Pasture and range condition rated 32 percent very poor, 27 poor, 27 fair, 13 good, and 1 excellent.

Stock water supplies rated 18 percent very short, 31 short, 50 adequate, and 1 surplus.
