Meade County Commission Meeting

Meade County Commission Meeting
Meade County Commission working on 2018 budget
Gary Matthews - July 13, 2017

STURGIS, S.D. - The Meade County Commission met in regular session on Wednesday, July 12.  The day was mostly spent on 2018 budget reviews for the various county departments.

The commission is legally and morally obligated to have a balanced budget, and the good things to spend the money on always exceed the available funds. Therefore, the day was spent talking about what things they cannot fund. Commissioner Linda Rausch says "generally, the departments were very helpful in sorting through the things that can wait until later or things not to fund at all."

The commission has over $356,000 in non-mandated funding requests from various organizations this year. Rausch says generally, the departments were very helpful in sorting through the things that can wait until later or things not to fund at all.

By the end of the day Rausch says they were much closer to a balanced budget, but still have some work to do. The need for work on county roads is always a high dollar item, and commissioners had to cut some big road projects. However, Rausch says the list isn’t finalized.

The commission will have to pass the final budget by September.
