Fire near Wanblee grows
News Staff - July 17, 2017

RAPID CITY, S.D. - Fire crews have their hands full battling a fire near Wanblee.

According to Pennington County Fire Administrator Jerome Harvey, the wildfire has burned between 3,500 and 4,000 acres. That is down a little bit from an earlier estimate of 5,000 acres.

Overnight Sunday, the fire spread in all directions. Crews are working to stop the forward progression of the fire. It is 0% contained at this time.

The fire is located near the intersection of Hwy 73 and Hwy 44, south of Kadoka.

Two structures have burned. Tweets from the Martin Volunteer Fire Department say there was a major push of the fire Monday morning and homes in the area are now being threatened.

Suppression efforts are being hampered by drought stressed vegetation and steep inaccessible terrain.

The fire started at approximately 4:33 p.m. Sunday, July 16. The Bureau of Indian Affairs is leading the investigation into the cause of the fire.
