Deadwood Gaming Numbers Tumble
Deadwood's June gaming numbers nosedive
News Staff - July 28, 2017

DEADWOOD, S.D. - According to statistics released today by the South Dakota Commission on Gaming, the June 2017 gaming handle showed a decrease of 8.29 percent, with slot machine handle decreasing by 8.70 percent when compared to June 2016. The table game handle was down 1.22 percent, when compared to June 2016 numbers. Deadwood gaming operators rewarded players with $1,404,329 in "free-play" for the month of June. Taxable adjusted gross revenues were $8,579,326 for June 2017.

"Deadwood gaming revenues experienced the biggest monthly percentage drop since February," said Mike Rodman, executive director of the Deadwood Gaming Association. "This disappointing monthly showing in the important summer season is certainly alarming to Deadwood gaming operators."

Deadwood Hotel occupancy rates fared better with a slight increase when compared with June 2016 numbers. According to monthly data released yesterday by Deadwood's City Finance Office, hotels in Deadwood had an occupancy rate of 69.26 percent for June 2017, which is a 0.95 percent increase over June 2016. June hotel occupancy shows Deadwood hotels sold 449 more room nights this June than last year.

"Deadwood's June occupancy rate of increase trended slightly above the national June occupancy rate of increase of 0.7 percent," said Rodman. "However, Deadwood's overall occupancy rate still was below the national occupancy rate of 73.4 percent for June 2017."
