World class bucking colt futurity in Faith
F.Ganje - August 8, 2017

FAITH, SD – There’s one place where you’ll run across some the world’s top rodeo contractor’s the second week of August; Faith, SD. For those who know the area’s reputation for producing great bucking horses and the cowboys who ride them, that won’t be a surprise.  But to others, you might wonder how good a horse has to be for someone to travel half way around the world just to check it out.

For the organizers of the United Bucking Horse Association Colt Futurity held during the Faith Stock Show and Rodeo, it’s not a stretch, says long-time rodeo secretary, Gnene Fordyce.

“It’s for the stock contractors,” shares Fordyce, “but it’s a real spectator event.  We host it in the morning, before the Faith Match Bronc Ride later that evening.  Contractor’s buck two, three, and four year olds using a modified rigging.  Those horses are awarded points that go towards a year-end finale, usually held in Las Vegas.”

Only in its third year, the bucking colt futurity - set for Wednesday, August 9, 2017 beginning at 10:00 a.m. – is already a leader in these types of events.  It’s there you’ll see a potential world champion bucking horse in the making.  And those who travel great distances for a chance to bid on what may be their next big money maker to add to a string.

“The first round of the bronc match held later in the day is the actual futurity,” explains Fordyce.  “These are typically five year old’s; maybe their third time out of the chute with a rider on them. Young horses that have won this futurity have gone on to be top sellers at the National Finals Rodeo Bucking Horse Sale.”

The futurity makes for a good fit  with the high stakes event held later in the day – the Faith Match Bronc Ride.   Rory Lemmel who produces the highly competitive match, says people in the world of stock contractors know where Faith is.

“It started with Rusty Foster who was the stock show president at the time,” recalls Lemmel. “He wanted to do something different, where you could see the young, coming stars of bronc horses.  Stock contractors from around the world know where Faith, SD is because they know the next stars that they’re interested in buying will be there. Usually, the horse that wins at Faith is the highest selling horse at the National Finals Rodeo Bucking Horse sale.

Work has been underway to brighten up the arena for what is the oldest, continuous rodeo in South Dakota.  Adding newer elements like the colt futurity and match bronc ride also put an extra shine on what is already considered a premiere event, says Fordyce.

“Our rodeo is a premiere rodeo for the SDRA/NRCA circuit,” observes Fordyce.  “We have a $1,000 added in every event – not just the rough stock. It’s also later on in the season so anyone who is trying to make the finals can get a big boost if they win here.”

In addition to the United Bucking Horse Association Colt Futurity and the Faith Match Bronc Ride, the action today at the 107th Faith Stock Show & Rodeo includes a livestock show, also beginning at 10:00a.m., the opening of the Stock Show Saloon and Paradise Amusements Carnival on Main Street.
