Plenty of action for last weekend of Faith Stock Show & Rodeo

FAITH, SD – There are few things more fun than a small town summer celebration.  And one of the longest running is in Faith, SD where for 107 years – every year – there’s been a celebration – including a rodeo.  Long time stock show secretary Gnene Fordyce took a break from spotting for fires to visit with the Big 81 about the Faith Stock Show & Rodeo that runs through Sunday.

“As far as I know Faith Stock is the oldest rodeo in South Dakota,” observes Fordyce.  “No other rodeo or gathering has happened every consecutive year, without interruption. Even during the Depression, they still had the Faith Stock Show & Rodeo.”

This year’s event currently underway promises even more for the thousands who attend the six day celebration in a location known as a ‘prairie oasis.’

“We have a carnival this year, so that’s exciting,” says Fordyce.  “This year we’re also changing up the relay event to Indian Relay Races, where contestants ride bareback instead of with a saddle.  Those races are always a big draw for us.” She adds, “Another new attraction this year is the Stockade Saloon where people can enjoy a beverage during arena events.

"And," she cotinues, "there's plenty of great rodeo action Friday through Sunday. This late in the season, contestants are chasing points to improve their place in year-end standings in the hopes of making the finals."

For such an extended celebration, it takes a lot of volunteers to bring all of the events together.  This year’s Parade Marshall's are Jake and Arlene Schauer of Schauer Angus who support the community in many ways and the Citizen of the Year is Janice Selby who organizes a support program for community members in need.  Stock show organizers are also presenting a special memorial buckle in honor of a long-time supporter Arlan Hulm, who passed away in March of this year. “We are having an Arlen Hulm Memorial Buckle for the Champion Senior Men’s Breakaway Roping this year,” shares Fordyce.  Arlen was an “Iron Man” recipient and helped out everybody in the Faith arena for many years.”

A full line up of events continues through Sunday for the 107th Faith Stock Show & Rodeo.  See a complete schedule at www.faithsd.com
