Duncan Trial

Duncan Trial
Trial for Rapid City man charged with murder underway
News Staff - September 8, 2017

RAPID CITY, S.D. - After two days of jury selection, the trial for Brian Duncan got under way in Rapid City Thursday afternoon.

Duncan is charged in the murder of 60-year-old Helen Wright, whose body was found in a Rapid City motel in 2015.

In opening statements, Pennington County Deputy State's Attorney Scott Roetzel told the jury that on November 4th of 2015, police were called to the Western Thrifty Inn after housekeeping found Helen Wright dead on the bed with bruises all over her body.

The state says Duncan lived in the Rapid City motel with his significant other, Helen Wright.

The state says eleven days later, Duncan was located in Sioux Falls and questioned by police where he admits that he was the last person to see her alive.

Roetzel says a forensic pathologist will later testify that Wright died of strangulation.
But Duncan's attorney, Conor Duffy, told the jury that Wright had a lot of health problems, saying she had pneumonia and a blocked coronary artery.

Duffy says they also have a forensic pathologist that will later testify that Wright died of natural causes.

The defense says Duncan tried to help Wright but panicked and made an irrational decision to leave after she died.

The trial continues through next week.
