AUSTIN, Tex. – The Black Hills State University volleyball team swept Southern Arkansas University, 3-0, and fell, 3-1, to St. Edwards University in the second match on Saturday afternoon at the Hilltopper Classic.

Black Hills State falls to 3-5 on the season, while SAU improves to 3-8 on the year and SEU improves to 6-2 overall.

Game 1: BHSU 3, SAU 0

BHSU swept its first game of the day, defeating Southern Arkansas University, 3-0. The scores went as follows: 25-22, 25-18, and 25-18.

In the first set, the two teams traded off points the duration of the set. The Yellow Jackets trailed 21-19, until a 4-0 run forced SAU to take a timeout. The run started on a kill by Ellise Lech to come within one of the Lady Muleriders at 21-20. An error by SAU tied the match at 21-all. From there, back-to-back kills by E. Lech and Cheyenne Palu gave the Green and Gold a two-point lead at 23-21, causing SAU to use a timeout.

After the timeout, SAU scored a point to come within one at 23-22, on a kill by Bailey Cagle. However, that was not enough as BHSU scored the last two points off errors by the Muleriders, to take the set, 25-22, and lead the match, 1-0.

The Yellow Jackets were able to carry their momentum over into the second set, as they got out to a quick 6-1 start. The run started at 1-1, when a kill by Fehrin Ward gave BHSU the go-ahead point to 2-1. The next four points came off errors by SAU, and Palu tallied two kills.

At 24-14, the Muleriders started making a run at the Yellow Jackets, as they went on a 4-0 run to bring the score to 24-18. An error by the Green and Gold started the run for SAU, followed by two kills by Cagle and Seven Powers, and another error by BHSU. The Lady Muleriders run caused the Yellow Jackets to use a timeout to figure out how to win the last point.

The final point of set two came off a kill by E. Lech to close the set at 25-18 and take a 2-0 lead in the match.

The momentum continued for the Yellow Jackets but SAU was not going down without a fight, as the third set started.

BHSU kept the lead the duration of the set, but the Lady Muleriders kept within five points for the most part. At 18-13, SAU took a stab at the Yellow Jackets, going on a 4-0 run to trail by one point at 18-17, and again at 19-18.

From there, the Green and Gold were not letting the match out of their sight, as they closed the match out on a 6-0 run. The first four points of the run came from errors by SAU, followed by a service ace by Laurel Lech and a kill by Tara Hall. The Yellow Jackets closed out the set at 25-18 and ended the match, 3-0.

"Our win against Southern Arkansas was important because it showed that we can consistently compete for three sets and finish when it matters," said head coach Kristin Carmichael. "We were aggressive on offense and blocked well. We also had great ball control and serve receive passes which allowed us to run an in-system offense."

E. Lech and Palu led the offense with nine kills and a .389 hitting percentage each. L. Lech tallied 31 assists to help on the offense as well.

On defense, Sydney Ederhoff recorded 12 digs, while Reilley Baty and Valerie Blake registered 11 and 10, respectively. Palu helped on defense tallying four blocks and the team had six total.

Game 2: SEU 3, BHSU 1

Black Hills State fell in its final match of the day at the Hilltopper Classic to St. Edwards University by a score of 3-1. The Yellow Jackets took set two, but fell in sets one, three, and four. The sets went as follows: 25-12, 25-22, 25-18, and 25-20.

Trailing 1-0 in the match, the Yellow Jackets got out to a quick 4-0 lead with SEU making two errors and BHSU tallying two kills by E. Lech and Fehrin Ward, in the second set.
The Green and Gold led most of the second set until 17-11. From there, the Lady Goats scored three straight points to come within three of BHSU at 17-14, causing Black Hills State to take a timeout.

After the timeout, an attack error by St. Edward's gave the Yellow Jackets a point to go up, 18-14. From there, the Lady Goats threatened BHSU's lead, scoring four points and coming within one point at 18-17. That was not enough though as the Green and Gold pushed to the end, closed out the set at 25-22, and tied the match 1-1.

In the third set, the two teams traded off points until 11-all, when the Lady Goats grabbed the lead with a point off a Black Hills State error. At 13-12, St. Edward's scored three straight points to go up 16-12 and cause BHSU to use a timeout.

After the timeout, Cheyenne Palu scored a kill to trail by five at 20-15, but it was not enough as SEU closed out the set at 25-18, and took the lead, 2-1, in the match.

In the fourth set, the Yellow Jackets went on a 7-0 run to try and force a set five. At 24-13, an attack error by the Lady Goats gave BHSU the first point of its run, 24-14. From there, Palu tallied two kills and St. Edward's tallied four errors to give the Yellow Jackets the seven points and bring them within four at 24-20.

It was not enough though as SEU closed out the fourth set to end the match at 25-20 and 3-1.

Tara Hall led the offense registering her first career double-double with 10 kills and 10 digs. Alongside Hall, Laurel Lech contributed to the offense recording 29 assists.

On defense, Sydney Ederhoff tallied 20 digs, while L. Lech notched 17 and Hall with 10. Fehrin Ward led the blockers with six blocks and the team registered 12 total blocks.
