Black Hills Stock Show adds more days, rebranding the 40th anniversary of PRCA rodeo all a part of changes coming to South Dakota's second largest event
F. Ganje - January 13, 2017

RAPID CITY, SD –  When Rapid City Mayor Steve Allender steps up to the podium today for a ribbon cutting ceremony, it will mark significant and positive changes coming to this year’s Black Hills Stock Show. The Mayor’s welcoming remarks, along with other dignitaries will be announcing another full week to the Black Hills Stock Show – events that begin today - while introducing the rebranding of the event that started it all in the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center, Rodeo Rapid City, created and produced by Sutton Rodeos.

“Our relationship with ranchers is historical and one that we like to celebrate with things like the stock show and rodeo that is becoming a part of Rapid City’s identity,” observes the Mayor.  “I think it’s fitting – in this 40th Anniversary year - to rebrand ‘Rodeo Rapid City’. We’re proud to have our name on this event.”

The public is invited to participate in the ribbon cutting press social that begins at 3:00pm today at the James Kjerstad Event Center on the Central States Fairgrounds and marks the official opening of the 2017 Black Hills Stock Show®.  This year’s show features new and exciting events such as the World Series of Team Roping, January 13-15, the South Dakota Cutting Horse competition, January 18-20, and the National Reined Cow Horse competition, January 21-22.

The press social will include the Mayor’s Proclamation, Central States Fair Board President Address and the official ribbon cutting to kick-off the 2017 event that Central States Fair General Manager Ron Jeffries says is shaping up to be another successful run for the fourth largest indoor stock show in the country.

“Black Hills Stock Show continues to grow,” says Jeffries.  “The Sutton family continues to add events to the rodeo side of activities.  We continue to add events to the entertainment side. And of course we work hard at maintaining the level of the quality of cattle and horses exhibited and sold here – the livestock that are the backbone of stock show.”

Both the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center and Sutton Rodeos are celebrating their 40th anniversary of producing stock show events and are looking forward to their continued relationship under the banner of Rodeo Rapid City.  The award winning PRCA rodeo events and other specialty acts have enthralled and entertained audiences for four decades in the Civic Center where performances begin Friday, January 27th. Steve Sutton, the fifth generation of the six-generation rodeo family, says the Rapid City show holds a special place.

“Dad innovated more things in Rapid City that have gone on to the national level than anyone I know,” he shares.  “We’re pretty proud of Rapid City and in this 40th Anniversary year, we’re rebranding the PRCA rodeos to Rodeo Rapid City. It’s a testament to our place in rodeo nationally, when announcers and contestants reference a cowboy or a placing as ‘winning in Rapid City.’  This is the perfect time to make that connection official.”

The Black Hills Stock Show kicks off January 13, 2017 and runs through Sunday, February 5, 2017 at the James Kjerstad Event Center and the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center.  A complete schedule can be found at www.blackhillsstockshow.com
