Lead voters approve chicken ordinance
News Staff - September 13, 2017

LEAD, S.D. - Voters in Lead approved an ordinance that limits the amount of chickens a resident can have.

The vote upholds an ordinance by the Lead City Commission in June that allows a maximum of six chickens in one's backyard and no other type of livestock. The chickens are to be kept at least 50 feet away from the house or public building.

Former Mayor Jerry Apa led the opposition charge, and wanted to keep what has been law in Lead for years -- the ability to keep chickens, roosters and other livestock.

The unofficial tally from Tuesday's election shows 174 votes in favor of the ordinance and 114 against.
