RAPID CITY, S.D. – The Black Hills State University volleyball team swept South Dakota Mines on Tuesday night, 3-0.

The sets went as follows: 25-22, 25-18, and 25-21.

The Yellow Jackets improve to 4-5 in conference and 7-11 overall, while SD Mines falls to 0-9 in conference and 2-17 overall.

In the first set, the Hardrockers jumped out to a quick 5-3 lead until the Yellow Jackets tied it up at nine-all with a service ace by Tara Hall. From there, BHSU increased the lead to 23-17 with kills from Kenzie Kazmer and Ellise Lech.

The Hardrockers tried to close in on the lead with a kill from Emily Newton to trail, 23-18. An error by SD Mines gave a point to BHSU to set up a set point situation. However, BHSU struggled to capitalize on it, as it gave up four points before ending the set at 25-22, and taking a 1-0 lead in the match.

The Yellow Jackets jumped out to a quick 4-1 lead in set two. E. Lech tallied two of the first four points for the Green and Gold, while the Hardrockers made two errors to give BHSU the other two points.

At 15-all, Kazmer smashed on down to give the Yellow Jackets the go-ahead point. From there, the Green and Gold's momentum continued as they closed out the set, 25-18, and took a 2-0 lead in the match.

The Yellow Jackets momentum carried into set three, as they sprung out to a 6-1 lead. A kill by Emily Newton stopped the BHSU 5-0 run and brought the Hardrockers to even the score at 5-all. E. Lech scored the go-ahead point for BHSU to lead, 6-5.

The two teams tied again at six- and seven-all before an attack error on SD Mines gave the Yellow Jackets a one-point advantage. The Green and Gold capitalized on that advantage to increase the lead to 12-8, forcing the Hardrockers to take a timeout.

After the timeout, SD Mines really found its momentum, as it closed in on the Yellow Jacket lead. A kill by Mikkella Reese brought the Lady Hardrockers within four. From there, SD Mines battled hard to trail by one at 16-15, before an error gave BHSU a two-point lead at 17-15.

At 24-19, the Hardrockers really put the pressure on the Yellow Jackets, as they went on a 4-0 run to trail by three at 24-21. However, it was not enough as the Green and Gold ended the set at 25-21, and swept the match, 3-0.

"We had great emotional control this match which allowed us to have ball control and go on runs," said head coach Kristin Carmichael. "It was an important rivalry and RMAC win."
