State Cross Country: Hill City girls win first ever state title

RAPID CITY, S.D. - The Hill City girls Cross Country team picked up their first win ever at the state championships Saturday.

The Rangers finished on top of the Class A team standings with a 33 score. Custer was second and St Thomas More was third for a three-way West River sweep at the top.

Winning the Class boys team title was West Central and Custer claimed second. St Thomas More finished in fifth.

Winning the Class A individual race for the girls was Cait Savey of Beresford in a time of 16:35.75. Karlee Simmons of Hill City finsihed in second. Winning the boys race was Derick Peters of West Central in a time of 13:06.20. Alex Atwood of Beresford was second. Ty Trainor of St Thomas More was the highest ranked West River runner, in fourth place.

At the Class AA meet, Brandon Valley won the girls team title with a score of 99. Sioux Falls Lincoln was second and Aberdeen Central was third. Stevens finished in 5th and Sturgis placed 12th. Sioux Falls Lincoln also captured the combined, overall championship title.

Sioux Falls Washington won the boys team title with a 37. Sioux Falls Lincoln placed second. Stevens finished in fourth and Sturgis placed 11th with Spearfish in ninth.

Jack Elliot of Lincoln won the boys race in a time of 14:09.73. Jackson Harrison of Aberdeen placed second. The top placing West River runner was Luke Meyer of Stevens in 17th.

Ellie Abraham of Brookings won the girls race in a time of 16:23.48. Courtney Klatt of Lincoln was second. Kylee Bennett of Sturgis was the highest placing West River running, finishing in fifth place. Bryanna Kuhn of Stevens finished just behind her in sixth place.

At the Class B beet, Newell won the girls team title with a score of 22. Ipswich was second and Deubrook Area was third. Ipswich won the boys team title with a score of 29 and Freeman placed second with Burke/South Central in third. Harding County was the highest placing West River team in seventh.

Winning the girls race was Delaney Leber of Newell with a time of 19:52.33. Josie Olsen of Deubrook Area was second.

Winning the boys race was Daniel Burkhalter of Bison in a time of 13:41.27. Kray Person of Burke/South Central was second.
