|Scooper boys and girls fall to Pierre
Gary Matthews - January 20, 2017
UNDATED - The Sturgis Scooper girls basketball team gave Pierre all it could handle -- but in the end, couldn't quite come out on top, falling 61-49 Thursday night.
Sturgis started well -- leading Pierre 12-8 at the end of the first quarter. But Pierre outscored Sturgis 28-8 in the second quarter to take a 35-20 halftime lead.
Sturgis put together a great third quarter, and crept to within a point of Pierre in the fourth. A 3-pointer by Emily Mikkelsen, however, keyed a run for Pierre down the stretch.
Turnovers again plagued the Scoopers.
Brook Janz led Sturgis in scoring with 21 points. Mikkelsen led Pierre with 18.
The Scooper boys, in the meantime, fell behind early to Pierre and couldn't quite recover. The Governors started hot, getting multiple 3-pointers from Brad Dean and Sam Edman.
After jumping out to a 22-8 lead, the Pierre lead was never really in jeopardy, and they cruised down the stretch for the 61-48 victory.
Taylor Eby led Sturgis with 14 points. Dawson Gueke added 12. The Scoopers shot 18-of-44 from the floor; 7-of-22 from beyond the 3-point line.
