Yellow Jackets Fall Short on Senior Night to No. 12 Regis, 3-1
BHSU Athletics - November 4, 2017

SPEARFISH, S.D. – The Black Hills State University volleyball team fell short of an upset on Friday night against No. 12 Regis University by a score of 3-1.

The Yellow Jackets won set two, while the Rangers took sets one, three, and four. The scores went as follows: 25-19, 25-19, 25-19, and 25-23.

The Green and Gold fall to 10-14 overall and 7-8 in conference action, while Regis improves to 23-3 on the season and 15-1 in conference play.

Trailing 1-0 in the match, the Yellow Jackets went on a 7-0 run halfway through the second set to force a fourth set. At 13-11, the Green and Gold run started with an attack error by the Rangers. A block assist by Laurel Lech and Fehrin Ward increased the lead for BHSU, 14-11.

Sydney Ederhoff smashed down a service ace to go ahead, 15-11. From there, Ward and L. Lech tallied two more points for the Green and Gold to lead, 17-11. Another attack error by the Rangers increased the lead by seven to 18-11, causing Regis to take a timeout.

After the timeout, Kenzie Kazmer notched the final point of the run, giving the Yellow Jackets an eight-point lead at 19-11. That was enough for Black Hills State to hold on and close the set out at 25-19, and tie the match, 1-1.

The Yellow Jackets were looking to bounce back after falling in set three, as the two teams traded off points the duration of the fourth set. The Green and Gold grabbed the lead at 21-20 to try to force a fifth set.

However, the Rangers battled hard, as they tied the set back at 22-all. From there, the two teams traded off the next two points to keep it tied at 23-all, but it was not enough for the Yellow Jackets, as Regis ended the set at 25-23, and took the match, 3-1.

"I'm proud of our team for battling a good Regis team," said head coach Kristin Carmichael. "I'm happy all of our seniors were able to contribute, and that as a team we played well on senior night."

Laurel Lech led the offense and registered a double-double with 36 assists and 17 digs. Kenzie Kazmer notched 13 kills with a .344 hitting percentage. Fehrin Ward was right behind with nine kills.

On defense, Sydney Ederhoff led the way with 18 digs right ahead of L. Lech. Reilley Baty and Tara Hall also notched double-digit digs with 11 and 10, respectively. Cheyenne Palu recorded four blocks and L. Lech had three. The team notched five total blocks.

Black Hills State returns to action on Saturday, November 4 to host Chadron State, with first serve set for 5:30 p.m.

In other college volleyball action, Chadron State defeated the South Dakota School of Mines in straight sets of 25-20, 25-21, and 25-23.
