Walt Cox 68, Whitewood, died November 3, 2017, at Sturgis Regional Hospital.

Walt was born to George R. & Berniece (Low) Cox on May 25, 1949, at Cheyenne, WY. He grew up in Albin, WY, and attended grade school there. He also lived in California for a short time. When he was a freshman, he moved to Belle Fourche, SD. He attended Belle Fourche High School, graduating in 1968.

On May 25, 1970, he married Janet Hardacre and to this union, a son, George, and a daughter, Denise, were born.

After graduating high school, some of the jobs he held included working at Dale’s Tire & Retread in Deadwood, the Meade County Highway dept., the City of Sturgis street maintenance, and the SD DOT. He plowed many miles of roads in the winter and performed other road maintenance in the summer.

On June 13, 1999, he suffered a massive stroke and was unable to continue his employment. Before he became disabled, some of his pastimes included camping with his family and dogs, going to auctions, working on pickups-especially Fords, riding horses, telling jokes, hunting, and joining friends at the restaurant in Whitewood for coffee. After his stroke, he was able to drive around Whitewood in his blue jeep for a few years. He would go to the Diner in Whitewood for lunch almost every day. After he had to give up driving, he spent many hours doing word search puzzles, coin collecting, and watching old westerns on TV. He still enjoyed going to the Hideaway Restaurant for lunch on occasion.

He is survived by his wife, Jan; son, George; daughter, Denise; daughter-in-law, Chris Cox; son-in-law, Paul Faiman; granddaughter, Bailey Richards and grandson-in-law, Ryan Richards; grandsons, Kody Cox and Alec Faiman; and great-grandchildren, Angelina, Braxton, and Brynleigh Richards. He is also survived by sisters, Vivian Flores of Maricopa, AZ, and Patty Kruse of Lead, SD; a special friend, Frank Perez (who was like a brother) of Pine Bluff, WY; sister-in-law, Lois Hardacre; and numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
He was preceded in death by both parents; his father-in-law, Cliff Hardacre; mother-in-law, Betty Hardacre; sisters, Nancy Yeminez, Georgia Moore, Jacque Offerdahl, and Ethel DiSimone; and a niece, Sherry Heidrich.

Visitation will be Tuesday, November 7, 2017, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. and 1 hour prior to services at Kinkade Funeral Chapel.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, November 8, 2017, at 10:00 a.m. at Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis. Burial will follow at the Whitewood Cemetery.
