Demand for microbreweries grows in central North Dakota

The Associated Press - November 28, 2017

BISMARCK, N.D. - The Bismarck area is becoming a hot spot for microbreweries in central North Dakota.

The Bismarck Tribune reports that Bismarck, Mandan and the surrounding area could be home to six of the state's nearly 20 microbreweries by next year.

The craft beer industry is also increasing demand for locally grown ingredients.

Bismarck-based Two Track Malting Company started making craft malt barley in June 2016. It now has a waitlist and recently doubled its production from 5 tons (about 4.5 metric tons) of malt each week to 10 tons (about 9 metric tons).

Ted Hoffman founded the North Dakota Brewers Guild. He says bars are now asking for 5-gallon (19-liter) kegs rather than 16-gallon (61-liter) kegs because they want to put more beers on tap from the growing number of local craft breweries.
