RAPID CITY, SD – Exceptional. Amazing. Record entries. Those are all descriptions organizers of the annual Black Hills Stock Show Horse Sale use in describing the upcoming two day event, set for Friday, January 27 and Saturday, January 28 at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center. Parred down to 177 lots – from an initial entry number of over 300 – this sale continues to be a jewel in the crown of the Black Hills Stock Show. Horse Sale committee member Tom Coolhan describes what to expect.
"We will have some really good selection of horses, all the way from young prospects up to fiinished roping horses and rodeo ready horses." says Coolhan. "There will be a lot of horses that are ready to go on to show in AQHA cow horse classes. And we've got some real honest ranch horses."
Thursday afternoon starts the horse sale check in process – a long day according to Stock Show Board member and chair of the horse committee Dean Johnson.
And then, beginning at 8am on Friday, 13 hand picked horses will compete in the Ranch Horse Select competition. These horses represent what those making the selection deem as the best ranch ready horses in the sale. A full preview of all lots follows and then it’s sale time at 2pm.
"The select horses are pretty special," observes Coolhan. "They will be previewed very well. They're going to be shown roping a cow, working a cow, going through a gate, doing a simple rein pattern. If you're looking for a good honres tranch horse, there are good choices there."
Both days of the sale offer similar quality of horses, finished to varying levels. On Saturday, January 28th, the preview gets underway at 8am and like the day before, will offer a wide variety through the sale ring at 2pm.
"The last few years the horse sale has been doing pretty well. There's a lot of interest in it. Those who have bought horses in the past are bringing their good horses to sell."
Previews are held at the Kjerstad Event Center on the Central States Fairgrounds with the two sales held in the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center.
