Fire and Ambulance District Meeting

Fire and Ambulance District Meeting
Town Hall set to discuss proposed fire and ambulance district
Gary Matthews - January 3, 2018

STURGIS, S.D. – The Sturgis Area Chamber of Commerce is hosting a town hall meeting Wednesday night to discuss the proposed creation of a fire and ambulance district.

Sturgis City Manager Daniel Ainslie says the district is being proposed because of the increase in the amount of fire and ambulance calls outside city limits.

He says because of the reduction of reimbursements allowed by private and governmental insurance providers, the city needs to make sure there is a long time funding plan in place for both fire and ambulance.

"Both fire and ambulance cover a significant area of Meade County. The fire department gets a vast majority of funding from its service calls, but a majority comes from the city of Sturgis through the general fund."

Ainslie says the problem is, not everyone is paying for a necessary public safety service.

"Unfortunately, not everyone helps pay for the service. So our concept is to set up a district where everyone who has property within the service area would help. WE just want to make everyone who actually gets the benefit helps keeps it viable."

As expected though, there are questions about the formation of the district, how far it will extend and how much rural residents would pay. That’s why town halls are being held to answer questions.

Wednesday night’s town hall will be held at the Sturgis Community Center and begin at 6:30 p.m.
