Miss Black Hills Stock Show competition comes to stock show

RAPID CITY, SD – Put beauty, brains and horsemanship on the end of a set of reins and you’ll have some idea what to expect in the  Miss Black Hills Stock Show Rodeo Queen competition.

Set for January 27, 2018 during the Black Hills Stock Show & Rodeo Rapid City, the event has a long legacy with what has become one of the largest in-door stock shows and rodeos in the country.

Contestants are judged based on a set criteria that takes them from the arena to the interview setting and for one lucky young woman, to the winner’s circle. 

Following are the entries for the 2018 Miss Black Hills Stock Show Rodeo Queen competition.

Meghan Proctor: Meghan is a 20-year-old native of Lusk, WY. She is the daughter of Bill and Geri Proctor and has an older brother, Miles. Meghan is currently attending the University of Wyoming in pursuit of her Bachelor's Degree in Agricultural Communications. She plans to graduate in the fall of 2018 and begin her career in the agricultural industry. Meghan has spent her whole life on the back of a horse and enjoys working with animals. She has been very involved with 4-H, Wyoming High School Rodeo, and other various agricultural activities. Meghan is currently promoting agriculture at the University of Wyoming through different clubs and organizations, including being a handler for the beloved mascot, ‘Cowboy Joe.’

Brittany Haberman: Brittany grew up on her family's farm in southeastern South Dakota near Olivet, where they raise beef cattle and hay. She showed horses for 10 years as a member of the Hutchinson County Young Riders 4-H club. She currently lives and works in Brookings and is a proud Jack Rabbit at South Dakota State University. She is an active member of SDSU's Hospitality Management Club and SDSULittle International. This is the third year she has been on Little I's Advertising  and Publicity Committee. She enjoys mentoring a third grade girl every week through the Brookings County Youth mentoring program. This May she will graduate with a bachelor's degree in Hospitality Management and minors in Events and Facilities Administration and Leadership.

Morgan Straub: Born and raised in Deadwood, SD, Morgan is the 23-year-old daughter of Marc and Wendy Straub. She  attends Dakota Wesleyan University in Mitchell, SD  where she is pursuing a Bachelor of Nursing degree. Morgan enjoys staying involved by acting as the Media Correspondent for the Student Nurses Association and volunteering her time amongst various groups. Morgan loves spending her extra time doing any and all activities outside, but especially challenging herself by riding young, unstarted horses. She has a passion for rodeo and the cowboy way of life. Morgan is very thankful for the opportunity she has to fulfill her dreams by participating in the sport of rodeo.

Carrietta Schalesky: This young lady is the 24-year-old daughter of T. W. And Faye Schalesky. She has a sister Gail and brother Jacob. The family ranch 45 miles northwest of Faith, SD.  Carrietta graduated this spring from South Dakota State University with a degree in animal science. She is very passionate about the sestern way of life and hopes to one day have a ranch of her own or take over the family operation to raise Charolais and Angus cattle, Rambouillet sheep, and purebred Quarter Horses. Carrietta enjoys working livestock on the family ranch, training horses, singing, photography, and sharing her love of agriculture with others. She would like to thank her sponsor Moreau River Rodeo Company of Faith, South Dakota. Carrietta wishes the best of luck to all participants and wants to welcome all visitors and guests to the 2018 Black Hills Stock Show Show and Rodeo Rapid City.
