Sutton Ranch Rodeo starts stock show week
News Staff - January 23, 2018

RAPID CITY, SD - There is ranch rodeo and then there is RANCH RODEO.  To see the difference that it makes when a family who ranches and rodeos 365 days out of the year puts on a ranch rodeo, be in the seats for the Sutton Ranch Rodeo, Monday, January 29, 2018.

The history of rodeo begins with local ranch hands and cowboys competing with and against each other for bragging rights.  The pride in competition was only surpassed by the quality of the horses they rode to compete on. The history of ranch rodeo in Rapid City began with Sutton Rodeos, Inc., who will showcase this year's Ranch Rodeo in the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center Barnett Arena.

The format consists of four man teams competing in three preliminary events, $500 paid to first place in each event and the chance to advance to the finals.

Preliminary rounds start at 10:00am. The top teams will advance to the final round beginning at 7:30 pm.  A Calcutta for the Final’s teams will be held in the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center’s Cowboy Bar at 5:00 p.m.

The finals consist of three progressive events with the top three places (1st-$4000, 2nd-$3000, 3rd-$2000) being paid out in the overall average.  There will be one elite competitor awarded the title of Top Hand and one horse awarded the title of Top Steed.

“We’re a nine-day event so we work at presenting a variety of events for people who are coming to town,” says Steve Sutton.  “The ranch rodeo is how organized rodeo got its start.  It gives local cowboys a chance to compete as well as national champions from the National Ranch Rodeo Association. Ranchers still cowboy every day and this is a setting where they can show their technique off. Plus, it's some of the best arena entertainment you'll see."
