Black Hills' Growth

Black Hills' Growth
Black Hills region showing record growth
News Staff - January 23, 2018

RAPID CITY, S.D. - The Black Hills is one of the fastest growing regions in the state of South Dakota.

It's growing 20 percent faster than the state. This means more developments are going up, the population is getting bigger, and city limits are expanding. And that's true for Rapid City.

"The city has grown to over 55 square miles and nearly 400 miles of roads to travel those square miles," said Steve Allender, Mayor of Rapid City. "That's a large surface area for a city our size."

KOTA-TV reports that Rapid City has a population of around 74,000 people. Its square mileage is only a little smaller than Minneapolis, which is 58 square miles, and actually bigger than San Francisco, which has 47.9 square miles.

Developments are going up, and development policies will be a focus for 2018.

The fastest growing area in the Black Hills is Summerset, growing 20 percent each year, compared to Rapid City which is growing about one percent per year.

Other areas like Piedmont and Rapid Valley are among the top growing areas too, with Box Elder, Hill City and Spearfish not too far behind.
