She was born December 15, 1927 at home near Breen, CO, to Dritt Joseph (D.J.) and Grace (Woods) Christy. She joined siblings Aileen, Marie, Joe, Helen, (Carol) Christine, Nell, and Margaret.

Betty grew up on a ranch in the Breen, Colorado, area. She and her sisters often rode the narrow gage train up Engineer Mountain near Durango to be with their father who ran sheep in the area. She graduated from Durango High School and attended Fort Lewis College. While there she met a handsome GI named John “Jack” Doerges. Later while ranching near Ignacio, Jack went back to school to obtain his teaching degree. Betty and Jack lived in various places in Colorado where Jack taught school and Betty worked at public libraries. They also spent time in Las Vegas, NM, Oakridge, TN, and Fort Collins, CO, where Jack obtained additional schooling. After moving to Fayette, Iowa, Betty established her own typesetting business called “Betty’s Desk”. Following a few years in Decorah, IA, they moved to Laramie, WY, in 1974 where she continued her business.

Betty enjoyed snowmobiling, being at a cabin in the Snowy Mountains near Laramie, cooking, reading and gardening. She was famous for her “Betty” apple cake, German lebkuchen cookies, and homemade jellies. She especially loved the plants which grew in her plant room in their Laramie home. She was a member of P.E.O. and the United Presbyterian Church of Laramie.

Betty suffered a debilitating stroke in January of 2017 and along with Jack who also suffered a stroke on the same day, moved to the Belle Fourche Healthcare Community to be near their son Joe and his family.
