Von Melrose (Brashears) Ullman, 86, Sturgis, SD, died at Sturgis Regional Hospital Monday, January 29, 2018.

She was born to Clinton and Carrie (Childers) Brashears at home in the Brush Creek community at Leola, AR.  Melrose began first grade at the Brush Creek School.  She accepted Jesus Christ as her personal Lord and Savior at an early age and was baptized and joined Brush Creek Missionary Baptist Church.  She worked and trusted God all of her life.

Melrose grew up willingly working on the farm where all the children helped the parents and younger children.  They had no piano but that was no problem for her.  Melrose made drawings of the piano keys on the inside window sills and learned to play on her drawings.  She practiced on her Aunt Lea's organ at her home.  She completed the Piano Home Study Course through the American School of Music.  Her parents had bought a piano by then and she was happily playing at home as well as at church.

For a time, she and her sister, Iwana, took turns caring for their great-grandmother while their Aunt Lillian worked.  They'd walk up the road and through the weeds a mile and a half and then the same path back to their home.  They enjoyed that.

She graduated from Leola High School in 1948 and received her Bachelor's degree from Ouachita Baptist College in 1956.  She also graduated from Louisiana State University in 1959 with a Master's degree.

Melrose kept Jesus close, prayed often, and found the way to get things done and managed even suffering with her own pains.  On Labor Day before her first day of college at Ouachita Baptist, she was seriously injured in the Bookmobile accident while working for the library at Arkadelphia, AR.  She graduated in four years and felt so blessed to be alive and about and thankful for the persons caring for her through the many weeks she was hospitalized.

Melrose married Gene Ullman February 11, 1994, at the First Baptist Church in Sturgis.  They lived north of Bear Butte.

She worked 31 years for the Veterans Administration starting in 1963 at Hines VA in Maywood Park, IL.  She began working at the Fort Meade VA in 1977 and retired after 17 years in 1994.

Recently she was doing some hard work and was asked about it.  She replied that her pain was gone.  God had taken her pain away after so long and she was very blessed.

Melrose supported causes that she cared about and was always interested in how other people were.  She prayed for our nation and the whole world.  She was praying for sweet, baby Faith the day that she left us. She was certainly an angel God loaned to us for a while and she is dearly missed.

She is survived by one son, John Edward (Wanda) Brashears, Sturgis, SD; one granddaughter, Carrie Rose Brashears (Bruce Bricker), Casper, WY; grandsons, Kalib John (Dakota) Brashears, Devin Glen (Carlie) Brashears, Spearfish, SD, and Beau Nathaniel Brashears, Hulette, WY; one great-grandson, Gavin Brashears; very special angel, great-granddaughter, Harmony Faith Ray Brashears Bricker; sisters, Iwana Mitchell, Hutsonville, IL, and Jaime Walker, Joette (Bill) Cordell, and one brother, Glen Brashears, all of Malvern, AR; several nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends; special aunt, Irene Childers, Dubberly, LA; and special cousins, Nadine Saffell, Houston, TX, and Erline Crain, Corpus Christi, TX.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Gene Ullman of Vale, SD; sister-in-law, Nikki Maria Lindvall Brashears; two brothers-in-law, G. A. Walker and F. Leon Mitchell.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, March 3, 2018, at the 7th Day Adventist Church at 290 US Hwy 14 in Spearfish with Pastor Jim Kack officiating.  Inurnment will be Tuesday, March 6th at 10:30 a.m. at Black Hills National Cemetery.
