Hot shooting leads Yellow Jacket men and women past Cougars

SPEARFISH, S.D.Three players scored in double figures, as the Black Hills State University men's basketball team cruised by Colorado Christian, 97-73, on Saturday evening.  

Fraser Malcolm had 20 points and five rebounds to lead the Yellow Jackets (13-10, 10-9 RMAC). Dez Stoudamire was 4-for-5 from beyond the three-point line, finishing with 19 points, while Connor O'Hearn chipped in 13.

The Yellow Jackets jumped out to a 7-0 lead, with Makaleb McInnis knocking down a trey and a jumper. BHSU attempted to keep the Cougars (4-20, 3-15 RMAC) at arms-length, but eventually CCU climbed back into the game, and tied it up, 20-20, with 8:37 left in the first half. Although the visitors never held a lead, they remained tight with the Green and Gold until three minutes left in the half, when the Yellow Jackets started pushing out the lead again.

Up three points with three minutes to play, BHSU went on a 7-2 run to hold an eight point lead, 42-34, with 1:36 left in the first half. The home team eventually led, 50-40, at the break.

The Cougars scored the first two points of the second half to get within eight points, but Malcolm responded with a layup of his own to push the lead back to double digits, where it would remain for the duration of the game. On the way to leading by a game-high 25 points, Stoudamire scored nine consecutive points, including two three pointers and an old-fashioned three-point play. The Yellow Jackets eventually earned a 24-point victory by a final score of 97-73.

BHSU shot 64.5 percent from the field (40-for-62), while CCU was 52.8 percent from the floor (28-for-53). The Yellow Jackets were 10-for-18 (55.6 percent) from beyond the arc, while the Cougars were 7-for-15 (46.7 percent) on three-pointers. BHSU was 7-for-8 (87.5 percent) from the free throw line, while Colorado Christian was 10-for-12 (83.3 percent).  The Green and Gold outrebounded the Cougars, 28-21.

Isaiah Hanson led all scorers with 21 points, while Justin Engesser had 13 and Christian Hyatt added 10 for the Cougars.

Meanwhile, A double-digit effort by three players helped carry the Black Hills State University women's basketball team to a victory over Colorado Christian University on Saturday night, 80-58.

The Yellow Jackets improve to 19-6 overall and 13-6 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action, while the Cougars fall to 6-17 on the season and 4-14 in conference play.

In the first quarter, it went back and forth, as the Cougars kept it close and tied the game twice, until a 12-2 run by the Green and Gold set the pace and momentum for the game. Lyndzi Rich started the run, making two from the line to take the Yellow Jacket lead up to 16-10.

Rachel Erickson followed up draining back-to-back shots from downtown. Rich found Remi Wientjes at half court, as Rich tipped the ball out to Wientjes, who drove to the basket for the layup to give BHSU a 25-10 lead. Jordan Baer of the Cougars stopped the run, hitting two from the line, but Rich closed out the quarter with two from the line to take the lead up to 27-12.

In the second quarter, the Green and Gold ran away with it, as Alyssia Martinez drained a shot from beyond the arc to increase the BHSU lead to 32-16. Julia Seamans hit back-to-back shots from downtown to go up, 38-16.

Halfway through the second quarter, the Yellow Jackets were shooting 50 percent from beyond the arc, as Danielle Noble hit her first career three to keep the high percentage going. The Cougars were unable to overcome the Green and Gold offense, as BHSU closed out the second quarter, 45-30.

In the third, it was nothing but net, as Seamans hit two more three-pointers, trying to chase down the school record that she set back in November, but came up short scoring five threes for all 15 of her points.

With under three minutes remaining in the third, the Yellow Jackets led, 61-37. Abby Switzer entered the game and hit another three for the Green and Gold to increase the lead, 67-39.

The Cougars were unable to recover and shut down the Black Hills State offense. The Yellow Jackets finished the game defeating Colorado Christian, 80-58.

Black Hills State shot 50 percent (28-of-56) from the field, 45.5 percent (10-of-22) from downtown, and 73.7 percent (14-of-19) from the line. The Green and Gold edged out the Cougars on rebounds, 32-27.

Rich led the offense with 20 points, going 8-of-11 from the floor and 4-of-4 from the line. Seamans scored 15, all from beyond the arc, and Erickson finished with 13 points. Seamans and Erickson each had four assists.

Rich grabbed five rebounds, while Noble had four.
