STURGIS, SD – A sink hole located above an existing drainage channel is being repaired by the Sturgis Public Works department. 

The parameters of the sink hole in the located of 3rd and Douglas Street near the Sturgis Williams Middle School, reached about two feet before the roadway collapsed.

Following an assessment of the damage, public works officials decided to replace the portion above the channel to include more support beams, rebar and  a new concrete road surface over the top.

According to Cody King, Sturgis Parks Superintendent, the located previously had a wooden bridge over it before a  new canal system was put in.  After reviewing the extent of the damage from the sinkhole, the department made the decision to completely renovate the area.

The repair time frame includes pouring concrete by March and reopening the road for use on March 12, 2018.
