Area fire crews battle fire near Piedmont

Gary Matthews and News Staff - March 8, 2018

STURGIS, S.D. - It was another busy afternoon for area firefighters Thursday.

Great Plains Fire Dispatch says fire crews in the northern hills were called to a blaze near Piedmont around 12:43 p.m.

The Chimney Canyon Fire was reported to be burning northwest of Piedmont, and was sending up thick, white smoke.

The fire could be easily seen from I-90.

First arriving Volunteer Firefighters observed the fire burning in cured grass, dead and down timber in the 2005 Rico fire burn scar.

The fire temporarily threatened two different set of structures, but firefighters mitigated the threat upon arrival on the scene.

Due to the location, terrain and weather conditions Firefighters requested additional help.

South Dakota Wildland Fire responded with engines, two hand crews and a dozer.  The U.S. Forest Service - Black Hills National Forest responded with engines and crew personnel.

Residents in the immediate area where notified by law enforcement of the incident, however there were NO evacuations.

At 4:30pm the fire was currently at 14 acres, 10% containment and was burning on Private-State and Federal Jurisdiction.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the South Dakota Wildland Fire.

Another fire sent fire crews in the southern hills scrambling Thursday afternoon.

A fire broke out in the Hermosa area, but crews there were able to contain it at about one acre. It was started by a burning slash pile.

Fire crews hope to have the Chimney Canyon Fire contained by Thursday night.
