Longtime Black Hills resident, Lyle Edwin Collins, Sr., died March 7, 2018,  in Loveland, CO.  He was 95.

He was born in Vale, SD, on September 22, 1922, the only child of Milton and Marguerite Collins, who operated restaurants in Deadwood, and were known to all, including their son, as Mom and Pop.

Lyle graduated from Deadwood High School where he played basketball, football, and baseball.  He entered the U.S. Navy in January 1943.  He served as a Ships Cook First Class on troop transports and Landing Ship, Tanks (LTS) in the Pacific until his honorable discharge in March 1946.  He was a founding member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5969 in Deadwood.

On October 26, 1946, Lyle married Lucille Pridgeon Whitelock in Deadwood.  They lived in Deadwood where Lyle owned and operated businesses as well as working in auto and real estate sales.  Lyle was active in Eastern Star and the Masons.  He served as Master of the Deadwood Masonic Temple, Worthy Grand Patron for the South Dakota Eastern Star, and Potentate of the Naja Shrine Temple.  He spent many hours helping children get treatment at the Shrine hospitals.  Lucille died in 2002.

In 2004, Lyle married Keo (Nelson) Lang of Loveland.  For a few years they split their time between Colorado and the Black Hills.  About eight years ago, the couple began living in Loveland full time.

     Lyle is survived by his wife, Keo Collins; son, Lyle, Jr. of Deadwood; former daughter-in-law, Mary Smith of Whitewood; daughter, Linda (Joe) Ames of West Linn, OR; daughter-in-law, Marcia Kay Whitelock of Beaverton, OR; grandsons, Lance Collins of Tempe, AZ, Chris Collins and Paul Miller, both of Scottsdale, AZ, and Jack Ames of Minneapolis, MN; granddaughter, Marcy Patton of Lake Oswego, OR; stepdaughters, Julia (Dee) Clements and Val (Greg) Hecker, both of Loveland, and Karen (Gary) Baxter of Virginia Beach, VA; stepson, Joe (Linda) Lang of Vista, CA; step-grandchildren, Brian Clements, Austin Johnson, David Johnson, and Sam Hecker, all of Loveland, Georgia Baxter of Virginia Beach, Amanda Lang of Cleveland, TN and Nicole Smith of Vista, CA; and numerous step-great-grandchildren.

     He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Lucille; stepsons, Eddie Whitelock and Gene Whitelock; and a granddaughter, Roberta Whitelock Reed.   

     Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. March 12, 2018, at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Deadwood burial with military honors at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis at 2:00 p.m..
