Belle Fourche, Faith girls drop opening games at state tournament
Gary Matthews and Sports Staff - March 9, 2018

UNDATED - Madison used an 18-5 run in the second quarter to pull ahead of Belle Fourche, and stun the top seeded Broncs in first round action of the Class A Girls Basketball Tournament.

The Broncs got off to a strong start -- leading Madison 18-16 after one.

But Jessi Giles was just too much for the Broncs, scoring 19 points to lead the Bulldogs. Her teammate Nicole Brown pulled down 20 rebounds as the Bulldogs won 56-42.

Shayla Howell led Belle Fourche with 10 points.

The Broncs only shot 34-percent on the day while Madison was 43-percent.

Top-seeded Belle Fourche only lost one game all season heading into the state tournament. They will move to the consolation bracket Friday and play Crow Creek.

Meanwhile at the Class B Tournament, top seeded Faith also lost their opening round game.

The Longhorns shot slightly better than their opponent Tripp-Delmont/Armour, but couldn't stop Maitlinn Reiner, as the junior scored 32 points and pulled down 12 rebounds.

The Longhorns also committed 18 turnovers, leading to 12 points for the Nighthawks.

Faith was led by Kailyn Groves' 8 points.

Faith will play Warner on Friday in the consolation bracket.
