Meade 46-1 School Walkout Plans

Meade 46-1 School Walkout Plans
Meade 46-1 School District puts plan in place for planned walkout
Gary Matthews - March 13, 2018

STURGIS, S.D. – School districts around the area are working with students on how to handle a proposed walkout Wednesday in honor of the 17 lives lost in a Florida school shooting.

Students plan to use a 17-minute walkout to honor shooting victims and voice their desire for stricter gun control.

Meade 46-1 School Superintendent Jon Pedersen says they will allow students to participate – but in a constructive way.

"We are encouraging those students who are interested in participating to meet in gymnasium. We are prepared to handle it, and certainly will allow students to leave class for 17 minutes and do something constructive to honor those 17 students."

In Rapid City, the district says they too, will allow students to use a gym or commons area to join the national movement to protest congressional inaction on gun violence.

Pedersen says safety is taken seriously within the Meade 46-1 School District.

"A lot of times, we have some students say they were just joking, but we can't do that anymore. We want to do what we  can to make sure our students are always safe. We are considering adding a full time resource officer as well.

Wednesday’s walkout is scheduled for 10:00 a.m.

Not all are in favor of the walkout. Some parents see the walkout allows student truancy and creates a potentially dangerous situation.
