Spirit of Six Award
March 17 marks 50 years since plance crash claimed the lives of six cheerleaders
SDPB Sports - March 18, 2018

RAPID CITY, S.D. - Saturday, March 17, is the 50th year anniversary of the disaster that killed nine people - including six cheerleaders from Rapid City high school.

The plane the cheerleaders were riding on was returning to Rapid City from the Class A State basketball tournament in Sioux Falls when it burst into flames attempting to land.

Terry Blanton, Shirley Landstrom, Jan Glaze, Kay McNutt, Gail Flohr and Diana McCluskey were the six cheerleaders lost. Also included in those who perished that day were Mr and Mrs. Ivan Landstrom (pilot and his wife) and Dorothy Lloyd (Squad Advisor)

Since the tragedy, a trophy has been presented to a cheerleading squad at each state basketball tournament. The award honors the lives of those lost on March 17, 1968.

The 'Spirit of Six' is presented to the cheerleaders who are "considered best on crowd control, dress, sportsmanship and enthusiasm." It's presented by the South Dakota Peace Officer's Association.
