Gladys O. Johnson Magnell, age 106 of Spearfish, SD, passed away peacefully at the David M. Dorsett Healthcare Center in Spearfish.

She was born March 19, 1912 in Garnes Township in north-western Minnesota, the daughter of Charly and Mary (Larson) Johnson. She attended school through the 8th grade and was baptized and confirmed at the Ebenezer Lutheran Church. In 1936, she married Joseph Magnell and moved to McIntosh, Minnesota, where their son Donald was born. During World War II the family moved to San Diego, California where Gladys worked for Boeing Aircraft making instruments for aircraft landing and Joe worked in the shipyards. After the war they moved back to northern Minnesota. In 1965, they moved to Belle Fourche, SD to be near family and she worked in retail stores. In 1991, she and Joe retired to Washington Street in Spearfish, SD where she lived in her own home until the age of 100.

Through the years, she spent many hours in her flower gardens, quilting, knitting, and crocheting. She loved her church family at Our Saviors Lutheran Church and enjoyed the friendships developed while making quilts each week, which she did even at 100 years old. She was a loving influence in her granddaughters younger years and thoroughly enjoyed watching them grow up.

She is survived by her sister, Inga Linder, age 103 of Plummer, MN; her son, Donald (Margaret) Magnell, Spearfish, SD; four granddaughters, Nancy (Asa) Queen, Broomfield, CO, Kristin (Matthew) Gloeb, Omaha, NE, Elizabeth (Kelly) Koistinen, Spearfish, SD, and Mary (Lance) Marr, Broomfield, CO; seven great-grandchildren, Maggie (Cody) Biesinger, Garrett and Gavin Gloeb, Mikayka and Kody Koistinen, Avery and Tessa Marr, and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph in 1995; her parents; brothers, Albert, Melvin, Arthur, Clarence, Leonard, and Otto Johnson; and foster brother , Johnny Anderson; sisters, Josephine Boyd, Selma Nelson, and Amanda Johnson.

The family wishes to thank the loving caregivers at Dorsett Healthcare and Dr. Jason Knudson.

A memorial has been established to benefit the quilters guild of Our Saviors Lutheran Church.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30am, Monday, April 9, 2018 at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Spearfish, burial will follow at Rose Hill Cemetery.
