Edward A. Furois, 81, of Spearfish, SD passed away on April 8, 2018 in his home surrounded by family.

Vigil will be held at 7:30 pm on Sunday, April 15 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Spearfish. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 am on Monday, April 16 at the Church.

Ed was born in Deadwood, SD on July 17, 1936. He graduated from Spearfish High School and continued on to receive a Bachelor of Science degree in education from Black Hills Teachers College.

Ed married Mary A. Smith on August 8, 1958; they were married just shy of 60 years. He always said, “Mary is the best decision I ever made.”

Ed was a kind and generous businessman. As a young man he sold cars for Deadwood Motors. He and Mary bought the Spearfish Bootery in January of 1963 and operated it through April of 1999. Ed loved downtown Spearfish and enjoyed promoting the Queen City and all it had to offer. He received various awards and certificates for his dedication to making Spearfish a better place to live. Ed was always that happy face that welcomed everyone he met to our beautiful community.

Ed loved people and had the biggest and best hug in town. He touched the lives of more people than we will ever know and you knew by his happy or sad tears, he allowed people to touch his heart as well. He served as a Volunteer Fireman, served on the Spearfish School Board, he promoted the building of Lookout Memorial Hospital and served on their board, was on the Board of Directors for Northern Hills Training Center and spent countless hours enjoying the company of their clients.

Ed loved his church and his church family. He was active in the Knights of Columbus and joyfully served in many ministries behind the scenes. He flipped a lot of pancakes!

Ed loved the outdoors. He spent hours on the farm enjoying the peace and serenity it provided. He loved taking friends and family water skiing, snowmobiling, camping and traveling to see the beauty of creation.

Ed won many awards and received many accolades, but all that paled in comparison to his love for his family and the time he spent with them. As children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren ran through his home he could be heard saying, “I am the luckiest man in the world!”

Ed is survived by his wife Mary; children, Kathy (Paul) Young, Carol (Dean) Obenauer, Lisa (Craig) Hall and Kathy Furois Koch; siblings, Maureen Glanzer and Tom (Carol) Furois; grandchildren include Ryan (Erika)Young, Andy (Meagan)Young, Katie Young, Michael (Ashlye) Obenauer, Bethany Obenauer, Allen (Rosalind) Hall, Anna Hall, Geoffrey Hall, Alex (Morgn) Furois, Megan Furois and David Furois; great-grandchildren, Tayler, Madden, Palmer, Henley, Hudson and Wade. Many loved nieces and nephews, in-laws and many more family members and friends. Ed was preceded in death by his parents, Gilbert and Lucile Furois; son, Michael Furois and brother James Furois.

In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established to Regional Health Foundation Ed Furois Memorial-Spearfish Campus or Regional Health Foundation Ed Furois Memorial-Home Plus Hospice of the Northern Hills, P.O. Box 6000, Rapid City, SD 57709.
