Spearfish Man Death

Deadwood police say hypothermia appears to be cause of death for Spearfish man

News Staff - April 16, 2018

DEADWOOD — Police in Deadwood say a preliminary cause of death has been determined in the case of a Spearfish man found nearly three months after he went missing.

The Lawrence County Coroner's Office has preliminary determined that Christopher Oien, 28, died from hypothermia as a result of exposure. The cause of death is pending with toxicology reports still out. It typically takes weeks for these reports to be finalized.

Oien was last seen Jan. 15 on video from the Welcome Center in Deadwood. He was walking up Volin Street.

A person hunting for shed antlers found Oien Wednesday evening in a remote area one-quarter mile southwest of the Lodge at Deadwood

Law enforcement officers searched extensively for Oien with canine, horseback and other searches.
