BHSU Athletics - November 27, 2016

SPEARFISH, S.D. A balanced attack on offense and a strong defensive effort led the Black Hills State University men's basketball team to an 82-46 victory over Johnson & Wales Sunday afternoon in the Young Center. Three Yellow Jackets scored in double-digits in a game that the Green and Gold never trailed as Fraser Malcolm scored a game-high 13 points as Patrick Mendes and LD Thomas each added 10. Black Hills State is on a three-game winning streak and improves to 3-3 overall while JWU falls to 4-8. Black Hills State opened with an 8-0 lead before the Wildcats ran off seven points of their own. After a timeout, the Yellow Jackets continued to tack on points including a 12-2 run midway through the first half. The run began with a Zach McLemore layup and ended with a Stefan Desnica 3-point field goal with 5:07 remaining on the clock with a 28-13. Black Hills State entered the intermission with a 38-20 lead. Johnson & Wales twice cut the deficit to 14 points in the second half but each time the Yellow Jackets came back to put a stop to the small Wildcat run. The final time the deficit got cut to 14 points was on a Zeldon Peterson jumper in the paint but was answered by Desnica with a jumper in the paint on his own. Over the final 11:40 of the game, Black Hills State ended with a 33-11 run to win 82-46. The Yellow Jackets dominate the game in the paint, out-scoring the Wildcats 44-20, while scoring 24 points off turnovers and 20 second-chance points. The second chance points were courtesy of 16 offensive rebounds including six from Sam McCloud and three from Max Mueller. The 16 offensive boards are a season-high as the Green and Gold tallied 43 total rebounds, led by McCloud with 13. It is the second double-digit rebounding performance for the redshirt freshman. Zach McLemore, the Yellow Jackets leadings scorer, tallied seven points but made presence felt with a team-high four assists while adding a steal and four rebounds. A total of nine Yellow Jackets played at least 12 minutes in the game with 10 of the 11 players seeing action scoring at least three points. Black Hills State has now completed its nonconference schedule and begins Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action on Friday, travelling to the University of Colorado Colorado Springs for a 7:30 p.m. tipoff, followed by a trip to MSU Denver on Saturday with a 7 p.m. game.
