Galen Niederwerder, Meade County Commission Chairman
County commission to consider reducing ag assessments
Gary Matthews - April 25, 2018

STURGIS, SD - The Meade County Commission meets today (Wed., April 25, 2018) and will be discussing a possible reduction in ag assessments.

Commission Chairman Galen Niederwerder says due to the severity of the 2017 drought, a total adjustment of 26 percent is justifiable.

A complicated process, the county must stay above the 85 percent level of assessment as per South Dakota Codified Law.  Niederwerder says the county will take that into account.

The county took a 10 percent reduction for loss of prodcution due to the drought for the 2017 assessment.  Applying the same methodology for the 2018 assessment year, it would require a 26 percent reduction for the same reasons.

The commission meets at the Erskine/Meade County Administration Building, and will discuss the issue this morning.  The meeting begins at 8:30a.m. and will be broadcast on the Meade County Facebook page.
