Hardrocker Volleyball Hires Torvi As New Head Coach

Release from School of Mines Athletics - May 10, 2018

RAPID CITY, S.D. --- South Dakota School of Mines Athletics Director Joel Lueken is pleased to announce the hiring of Lauren Torvi as the new head coach of the Hardrocker women's volleyball program.

The Hardrocker Family just got better. We are extremely excited to welcome Coach Torvi to Rapid City," Lueken said. "Lauren has great knowledge of volleyball and has had a lot of success in her career as a coach and a player. We feel she is a great fit for South Dakota School of Mines and will mentor our young ladies and lead our volleyball program forward."

Torvi comes to SD Mines after spending two seasons as head coach of the University of Minnesota, Morris volleyball program in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference.

"I am excited and honored to be a part of the Hardrocker family," Torvi said. "From stepping foot on campus to meeting the staff I knew this was an exceptional place. I see so much potential in the scholar-athletes of this program and I cannot wait to hit the ground running and create something special with them."

During the 2017 season, Torvi led the team to its best record in program history (26-8); coached two AVCA All-American Honor Mention athletes; had the UMAC Defensive Player of The Year and Rookie of the Year honorees on the roster for second consecutive season; put six players on the All-Conference list; was awarded the AVCA Team Academic Award; and guided the program to its fifth-straight conference championship appearance.

Prior to UMM, Torvi was the lead assistant at Colorado College in a standout volleyball program boasting 18 consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances.

Torvi has been a key part of three nationally recognized NCAA Div. III volleyball programs – at Colorado College, DePauw University (Ind.) and Springfield College (Mass.). As first assistant coach, Torvi helped Colorado College volleyball reach a two-year record of 64-13 including post-season play. She also led the recruitment of volleyball athletes for the national liberal arts college.

Prior to Colorado College, Torvi was an assistant volleyball coach and graduate assistant at DePauw University (Ind.) where she helped take the DePauw women to their first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2000 and recognition on the American Volleyball Coaches Association Top 25.

As a middle at Springfield College, she was a two-time All-Conference player and helped lead her team to the NCAA Division III Elite Eight in 2011. Torvi was an American Volleyball Coaches' Association First-Team All-American, New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference Player of the Year, New England Women's Volleyball Association Player of the Year and Eastern College Athletic Conference Division III New England Volleyball All-Stars Offensive Player of the Year, all as a senior. She graduated from Springfield College in 2012 with a bachelor's degree in sport management and minored in business administration. She completed her master's in sport and recreation management from Indiana State University in 2014.

Torvi has served as a USA Volleyball National Team Tryouts court coach, an administrative staff member at the USA Volleyball Girls Junior National Championships, and coach for numerous volleyball camps.
"Lauren's enthusiasm, organization and knowledge of what it takes to win at a high academic institution is impressive," said senior Associate Athletic Director Tiffany McCampbell. "I welcome her to the Hardrocker family."

Torvi takes over the Lady Hardrocker team for Jenni Bolduc (one season) and becomes the 12th head coach of the SD Mines volleyball program (established in 1975).

"It will be a privilege to work with these women and watch them develop into strong female leaders on the court and in the classroom," Torvi said. "I want to thank Joel Lueken and Tiffany McCampbell for giving me the opportunity to be the next leader of this program --- they are great ambassadors for Hardrocker Athletics and I am looking forward to working under their leadership."

Torvi's official start date will be June 4.
