Meade School Board Meeting Recap

Meade School Board Meeting Recap
Meade 46-1 School Board discusses budget, new Union Center school
Gary Matthews - May 15, 2018

STURGIS, S.D. – The Meade 46-1 School Board discussed their preliminary budget for 2019 last night.

Superintendent John Pedersen says next year's general budget looks to be about $19.3-million. That includes a capital outlay is $5.7-million and the special services budget looks to be around $3.9-million.

The board also discussed the proposed new facility in Union Center.

"There has been discussion over the past year on that proposed facility at Union Center. It would replace the current facilities at Enning and Union Center and would have four classrooms, a commons area and conference room. It would be located due south of the gymnasium they currently have."

Pedersen says the new facility is estimated at $1.9-million.
In other education matters, the board is also looking into adding another school resource officer.

"It is my recommendation to the board that we look into another resource officer. We currently have one and that officer covers the high school, middle school and elementary; and that's a challenge. What I think we need to take a look at; if we can come up with the funds, just to have a full time at the high school, with the other committing time to the middle school and elementary."

Pedersen says he has had some discussions with Sturgis Police Geody VanDewaater, and it's possible the two could work together to find funding for the additional officer.

He says the city of Summerset is also looking at a possible grant to hire a resource officer for the new school there.
