Phyllis Marian Oliver was born August 30, 1932, to Lemuel McMains and Florence (Bronson) McMains in Belle Fourche, SD.  Phyllis graduated from Newell School and married Dean Oliver, right out of high school in December 1950.  They had 63 years of wedded bliss before Dean passed away in June of 2015 (okay, it wasn't all bliss!).

The couple moved to the Newell area in 1952, bought a small farm along the Belle Fourche River, and, over the years, expanded into a well-known farming/ranching operation.  They raised sheep, cattle, alfalfa hay, and kids.  Those kids included Debbie, Darla, Randy, Patty, and Penny.

Dean and Phyllis ran an excavation business in the community, doing various projects for area farmers and ranchers while building up their farm and ranch operation at the same time.  Phyllis worked right alongside Dean driving truck, running various pieces of equipment, helping to run the farm, plus taking care of her family and home.

Phyllis loved gardening.  She always had a large garden area every year raising corn, tomatoes, cucumbers, and smaller amounts of a lot of other things.  She made sure her kids got involved in the garden and helped a lot – for one reason or another (usually when we were in trouble).

Phyllis was very dedicated to her family and always took the time to make sure her responsibilities to her children were met.  Sunday School every Sunday, all thru the school years – trips thru the Hills on weekends to see the different attractions – helping with all the different 4-H activities – the different functions and events that went on at school over the years; all the things that a good mother and parent does for her kids.

Phyllis Oliver, 85, Newell, passed away June 24, 2018, at her home of 65 years.

Grateful for having shared her life are her children:  Debbie (Dave) Streets, Custer, SD; Darla (Tim) Creal, Tampa, FL; Randy (Connie) Oliver, Newell, SD; Patty (Karl) Sauer, Golden, CO; and Penny (Mike) Masters, Rapid City, SD; 11 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Dean; her brother, Jim McMains; and an infant granddaughter, Jane Elizabeth Sauer.

Visitation for family and friends will be at Kinkade Funeral Chapel, Sturgis, SD, from 5:00 to 7:00 PM, Thursday, June 28th.

Funeral services will be 10:00 AM June 29, 2018, at Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis with Pastor Derek Anderson officiating.  Interment will follow at Hope Cemetery in Newell.

A memorial fund has been established to the Newell Volunteer Fire Department.
