DOT says traffic counts continue to rise for this year's rallly

STURGIS, S.D. – As the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally heads into its final weekend, data from the South Dakota Department of Transportation shows that traffic is up 5.9-percent overall for the seven days of the event.

The numbers, released today, indicate 398,318  vehicles have entered Sturgis since Friday, August 3.

On Thursday, there 56,302 vehicles entering Sturgis, an 11.5-percent increase from Thursday of last year. That is the largest margin of increase so far this year. The next largest was Wednesday – an 11.4-percent increase in which 60,608 vehicles entered Sturgis.

So far, the only down day this year is Sunday, August 5, in which 52,153 entered Sturgis – a 4.2-percent decrease from 2016.

The DOT says this is the last daily traffic update they will release until the end of the rally. That final update will be released on Monday.
