Gary Matthews - March 4, 2017
RAPID CITY, S.D. - Rapid City Stevens held off the Sturgis Scoopers in the final seconds to win the Boys District 4AA Basketball Tournament Friday night.
The win sends the Stevens Raiders to the State Tournament.
The two teams battled back and forth for much of the game. Sturgis, down by eight at one time in the fourth quarter, took a brief one point lead only to have Stevens regain the lead with less than two minutes remaining.
Sturgis, down by 2 points, had a chance to tie with 30 seconds left, but couldn't get the points they needed. Down to one last shot with just .1 seconds left, a shot by Jace Fisher was off the mark and the Raiders escaped with the win.
Mason Archambault led the Raiders with 15 points.
Dawson Gueke led Sturgis with 15 points.
Sturgis will play Aberdeen Central on Tuesday for a chance to go to the state tournament.
Meanwhile, Rapid City Central kept their season alive with a 62-61 victory over Douglas in double overtime.
The game came down to free throws by Kaileb Walton-Blanden.
