PIERRE, S.D. - A Mitchell construction company owner pleaded for redemption in front of the Pierre City Commission Tuesday night. The issue at hand was awarding a big to a company for the city’s 2017 Curb and Gutter Project.
Big O Concrete Owner Josh Oliver and his company was the apparent low bidder out of four bids on the project, but some shoddy work his company performed in northeast Pierre five years ago still haunts him today.
Previous to the vote, Oliver asked the city commission to give him a second chance at performing work in Pierre.
City Engineer John Childs recommend awarding the bid to Sharp Enterprises, saying that they can’t take any chances with the high profile work that will be done this summer.
Pierre City Commissioner Jamie Huizenga stated that “we don’t have the luxury of babysitting this project in front of the Capitol,” and made a recommendation to award the bid to Sharp Enterprises.
The commission voted three to one to award the bid to Sharpe in the amount of 422,659 dollars. City Commissioner Jim Mehlhaff was the lone no vote, saying that he wanted to wait a week to get more information before awarding the bid. Mayor Laurie Gill was absent from the meeting.
