STURGIS, S.D. – A man who shot and killed his ex-girlfriend and another man in Faith nearly a year ago was sentenced to over 200 years in prison Wednesday.
Berton Cole Toavs admitted he shot and killed Eliza Edgins and Nathan Gann at a Faith home last April when Edgins tried to end her relationship with Toavs.
Judge Jerome Eckrich sentenced Toavs to 110 years for one count of manslaughter and 100 years for the second count, to be served consecutively.
Wednesday, during sentencing, a Rapid City forensic pathologist said Gann died from a single gunshot wound and Edgins was shot nine times.
The state said that when Toavs emptied his gun, he reloaded and shot Edgins again because she was still moving.
Toavs apologized in court, saying he never thought he was capable of killing someone; and hopes to one day renew his relationship with his children.
