Marcine E. Thomas, 90, of Belle Fourche died March 19, 2017 at the Garden Hills Assisted Living in Spearfish surrounded by her loving family.

Marcine E. Renkes was born in Alexandria, Minnesota on November 20, 1926. She was the daughter of John and Gertrude (Stariha) Renkes. Marcine was raised in Brandon, Minnesota, where her parents owned and operated a feed and seed business. She graduated from Brandon High School in 1944 as the class valedictorian. Upon graduation, she enrolled in a nursing program at St. Francis Hospital in Breckenridge, Minnesota. As a student nurse, she met and became engaged to Cliff Thomas, who was on furlough from an Army Air Corps overseas duty. Following her graduation as a registered nurse from St. Francis School of Nursing, they were married on December 29, 1947.

After briefly living in Mandan, North Dakota and Miles City, Montana, Cliff and Marcine owned and operated a retail pharmacy in Billings, Montana for 13 years. In 1964 they purchased the Carter Drug Store (later becoming Cliff Thomas Drug) in Belle Fourche, South Dakota where she resided for the next 50 years. Marcine was active in the operation of the drug store and had a flair for merchandising and developed a fine gift department which was renowned throughout the Tri State area.

In retirement, Marcine enjoyed playing bridge with her friends and acquiring many antiques, fine gifts and collectibles. She was an active member of St. Paul’s Altar Society, Questers, Antique Club and the local Beta Sigma Phi organization. Marcine was a devoted wife in her 60 years of marriage and a loving mother to her seven children. She was extremely proud of the accomplishments of her children and their families. She enjoyed the countless activities at their cabin in Nemo, South Dakota entertaining friends and family for over 35 years.

She is survived by her seven children, Susan (Tony) Connelly, Omaha, NE; Mary (Kim) Johnson, Spearfish, SD; John (Patty) Thomas, Belle Fourche, SD; Nancy (Jim) Van Emmerik, Longmont, CO; Barbara (Ferman) Clarkson, Belle Fourche, SD; Sally (Dale) Evenson, Pine Haven, WY; and Michael (Dawn) Thomas, Sioux Falls, SD. Fifteen grandchildren, Kelly (Dave) Lawler, Katherine (John) Carroll, John Connelly, Thomas Connelly, Jeffery (Kelly) Thomas, Jeremy Thomas, Jennifer (Mark) Kennedy, Elizabeth (Greg) Peterson, Christopher Van Emmerik¸ Sarah Clarkson, David Clarkson, Megan (Caleb) Dacar, Sammi Jo Lincoln, Jacob Thomas and Emily Thomas; Seventeen great grandchildren; two sisters, Shirley Nord, Sartell, MN and Bernadine (John) Hagaman, Fifty Lakes, MN and sister-in-law, Roberta Thomas, Kalispel, MT.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Cliff Thomas (in 2007) and brother-in-law, James Thomas.

Visitation will be from Noon to 5:00 PM, Wednesday, March 22 at Kline Funeral Chapel in Belle Fourche.

A Vigil will be held 8:00 PM, Wednesday, March 22 at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Belle Fourche with a Mass of Christian Burial to be held 10:30 AM, Thursday, March 23 at the Church.

Interment will follow at 2:00 PM at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis.

A memorial has been established.
