Man sentenced for concealing murder of 17-year-old girl

RAPID CITY, S.D. – On May 14, in Rapid City, U.S. Circuit Judge Jonathan A. Kobes sentenced Ivan White Plume, also known as Ivan White Butterfly, 33, of Manderson, South Dakota, for Misprison of a Felony.

Ivan White Plume received time served (one year and 11 months), one year of supervised release, and a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.

A federal grand jury indicted Ivan White Plume in May 2022 for Accessory After the Fact to Second Degree Murder. He pleaded guilty on February 14, 2024.

In February 2022, after tribal law enforcement questioned White Butterfly about a missing 17-year-old girl, he concealed his knowledge of her death and his relative Tyson White Plume’s confession to the murder.

The Major Crimes Act, a federal statute, mandated prosecution in federal court due to the crime occurring in Indian Country. The FBI and the Oglala Sioux Tribe Department of Public Safety Criminal Investigations Division investigated the case. Assistant U.S. Attorney Heather Knox handled the prosecution.
