Sturgis begins discussion on malt beverage license cap

STURGIS, S.D. – Sturgis Council members began discussions this week on a request by city staff to lift the current cap on the number of malt beverage licenses.

Currently, the city sets the total number of standard malt beverage licenses at 40.

In recent months, the City has reached, or will soon reach, the maximum number of licenses and there is a potential that more licenses may be requested in the near future.

Council President Kevin Forrester asked about the benefit of adding more malt beverage licenses.

Mayor Angela Wilkerson, however, says an important problem with the limit is that a sizeable portion of the licenses are held by businesses which operate primarily during the Rally. She says the limit may prevent future businesses who intend to operate year round business from obtaining one.

The council decided to continue discussion on the matter rather than holding first reading on an ordinance that could eliminate the current cap.
