Man arrested after fleeing from police in Deadwood

DEADWOOD, S.D. – Police in Deadwood say a person has been arrested after an incident that began with a domestic violence call.

Police say on December 28, at approximately 1204 hours, Deadwood Officers located a suspect vehicle to an active domestic violence that occurred in Lead. Deadwood Officers conducted a traffic stop on the suspect, who was sitting in his vehicle, in a local casino parking lot. The suspect driver refused commands to step out of the vehicle. The male suspect backed into the Officers patrol car at a high rate of speed, striking one Officer. The Deadwood patrol car was occupied by an Officer in training. The male suspect fled the parking lot at a high rate of speed. Shortly thereafter, the male suspect stole a vehicle in Lawrence County and was later located and apprehended in Rapid City after a short police chase.

The male suspect who was apprehended was operating a different vehicle than the one stolen in Lawrence County. That separate incident is still under investigation.

Both Deadwood Officers are okay, and no one was hurt. The Deadwood Police Department would like to thank Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office, Rapid City Police Department, Pennington County Sheriff’s Office, Sturgis Police Department, Meade County Sheriff’s Office and the South Dakota Highway Patrol for their assistance in this matter.
