RAPID CITY, S.D. – Several hundred people turned out Wednesday morning for the activation ceremony for the 235th Military Police Company of the South Dakota National Guard, based out of Rapid City.
Several dozen members are activating to support federal security efforts at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.
Keynote addresses were provided by South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem, US Rep. Dusty Johnson and Rapid City Mayor Steve Allender.
The unit is under the command of Cpt Pat Moran.
“We’ll be working on tactics and procedures for taking care of prisoners in a facility atmosphere, so we’ll be down there for about a month and then we’ll be in Guantanamo Bay for about 9 months,” explained Moran.
“We’ll come back to Fort Bliss, Texas for another month, and hopefully be back here middle of November 2022.”
