4-H Capitol Day offers a look into legislative process

PIERRE, S.D. – South Dakota State University (SDSU) Extension’s 4-H program is gearing up for its fourth annual 4-H Capitol Day, scheduled for January 17, 2024, in Pierre. This event aligns with Brookings and SDSU Days at the Capitol and invites 4-H supporters of all ages to participate in a day filled with educational and fun activities.

The event, known for its emphasis on legislative education, offers participants an opportunity to tour the Capitol building, observe legislative committee hearings, and engage in roundtable discussions with state legislators. A highlight of the day is the anticipated ice cream social, providing a sweet end to the educational experiences.

To ensure a spot at this event, registration is required by January 1, 2024. Interested parties can register by visiting the 2024 SDSU Extension 4-H Capitol Day event page. After registration closes, attendees will receive more details and a full schedule of the day’s events.

The organization and coordination of the 4-H Capitol Day are overseen by the South Dakota 4-H Civic Education Committee. Key members of this committee include Jenae Hansen-Gross, SDSU Extension 4-H Volunteer Development Field Specialist; Ron Frederick, SDSU Extension 4-H Youth Program Advisor – Rosebud; and Hilary Risner, SDSU Extension Program Manager and Regional Youth Educator.

This event serves as a platform for youth and supporters to gain a deeper understanding of the legislative process and engage in civic education. Participants are encouraged to wear their 4-H green to show support for the organization. The 4-H Capitol Day is not just an educational experience but also a celebration of the vibrant 4-H community in South Dakota.
