Ag lenders keeping a close eye on loans as credit availability tightens in some regions

Jerry Oster, WNAX - August 13, 2019

PIERRE, SD - The South Dakota Banker’s Association (SDBA) will host their Ag Credit Conference this week in Pierre.  The annual conference, usually held in April, was postponed at that time due to weather conditions.

SDBA President Curt Everson says considering ag conditions, that cancellation may have been a good thing.

“We have a better picture of what the profitability in ag looks like now than we would have had back in April,” says Everson.  “We didn’t know what weather conditions were going to do in terms of planted acres.”

Everson says bankers are keeping a close eye on ag operations. “Everybody is looking at their loan portfolios to see how each of their customers are performing.”

He says the industry is seeing more reports of credit lines getting tight. “There have been national stories on tightening of available credit in the market place, especially on the part of the some of the larger banks that tend to look at agriculture differently as a part of their loan portfolio than rural community banks do – or any other bank does– that’s doing business here in South Dakota.”

The conference will be held Aug. 14-16, 2019 at the Ramkota Conference Center in Pierre.
