Agnes R. Erickson

Agnes R. Erickson

- May 20, 2019

Agnes R. Erickson was born May 17, 1931, in Sturgis, SD, to Adelbert and Emma (McDonald) Lettau.  She grew up on a ranch on Alkali Divide, received her eighth-grade education in the Laurel School, and graduated from Sturgis High School in 1948.  After attending Black Hills Teachers College in Spearfish, SD, she taught in rural Meade County schools for 11 years.

Agnes married the love of her life, Lloyd Erickson, also of Alkali, on May 21, 1951.  In 1961, she began her career with the United States Postal Service, where she worked for the next 28 years.  She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and later the United Methodist Church.  She was a member of the Berniece Rebekah Lodge, where she held several offices over the years.  She was also very active in the Sturgis Volunteer Fire Department Auxiliary for many years, a few of which she held the office of president.  Throughout this time, she and Lloyd attended many events related to the fire service, including the annual state fire school, which they attended for decades.

Agnes was the best friend you could ask for, as well as the most wonderful and loving mother and grandmother.  In her retirement, she enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and traveling.  She had a great sense of humor, and, no matter the circumstances, she always remained cheerful and upbeat.  These admirable qualities stayed with her up until just days before her passing.

Agnes passed away at her daughters’ home in Highlands Ranch, CO, at age 87 on Monday, April 15, 2019.

She is survived by her two daughters, Rhonda (Fred) McPherson of Sturgis, and Patricia Erickson of Highlands Ranch, CO; grandchildren, Jessica (Mike) Cooper of Sturgis, Emily (Brandon) Larson of Rapid City, Baxter McPherson of Whitewood, Lori (Chase) Lyman of Box Elder, and Ashley DeYonge and Taylor DeYonge, both of Highlands Ranch, CO; and great-grandchildren, Natalie Emma Renee Ihler of Everett, WA, Grace Isabel McPherson Cooper of Sturgis, Cody Joseph Lyman of Box Elder, Eleanor Dawn Larson of Rapid City, and Ezra Lloyd Corey of Highlands Ranch, CO.

She was preceded in death by two brothers; her parents; and husband, Lloyd, who passed in 2006.

Memorial services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday, May 31, 2019, at Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis.  Inurnment will follow at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis.

The family kindly requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made in Agnes’ name to the Sturgis Animal Shelter, 1140 Otter Road, Sturgis, SD 57785.
